Systemic change through progressive leadership and civic participation is the focus of Praxis Peace Institute’s upcoming discussion. Former Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin will speak at Sonoma Community Center on Sunday, Jan. 27.

McLaughlin founded the Richmond Progressive Alliance and led her city to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, reduce homicides by 75 percent, and collect $100 million dollars in additional taxes from Chevron Richmond refinery while suing the oil giant for community pollution and harm, according to a press release from Praxis.

McLaughlin, according to the release, also led the fight against foreclosures in the wake of the 2008 sub-prime mortgage meltdown by advocating use of the city’s eminent domain powers. In 2016, McLaughlin helped pass the first new rent control law to take effect in California in 30 years.

McLaughlin has never accepted corporate donations in her campaigns, according to Praxis event organizers, and helped to create a super majority on the Richmond City Council by campaigning to elect two additional progressives. She has earned the respect of many progressives, including Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

The event is billed as a “how-to” for citizens interested in creating systemic change in their communities, which, according to McLaughlin, is both possible and can happen quickly. McLaughlin will be signing copies of her book, “Winning Richmond: How A Progressive Alliance Won City Hall,” at the 3 p.m. event.

Tickets are $20 and available at praxispeace.org.
