The National Weather Service is scheduled later Friday to issue a high-surf warning for Sunday and Monday as a storm system enters the North Bay that could bring waves as high as 50 feet in some areas.

The system will enter the region late Sunday morning and will bring swells from 17 to 21 feet that will last from 19 to 21 seconds, said Anna Schneider, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Monterey.

That will result in large breaking waves from 25 to 40 feet from Sunday night into Monday morning, with some as high as 50 feet, Schneider said.

The weather service is warning beachgoers to be cautious along the Sonoma Coast this weekend. “There is a risk that someone could be unsuspectingly pulled in,” Schneider said.

The storm system, which is coming south from the Aleutian Islands, is expected to drop 1 to 3 inches of rain in the North Bay before leaving the area by Monday afternoon, Schneider said.

Temperatures should remain constant with highs ranging from the 50s to the 60s, she added.
