The Great Shake-Out in Sonoma

Students practice dropping, covering and holding on all campuses|

Sonoma Valley schools participated in the Great California Shake Out event on Oct. 18. To recognize the importance of earthquake preparedness, annually students across the state and on all campuses in all grades in SVUSD participate in short, age-appropriate earthquake drills. During the drills, students practice, “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” the recommended safety action to take during an earthquake.

In the event of a major earthquake the district will communicate with families immediately via phone/text/email/social media with detailed instructions, according to Sydney Smith, district coordinator of student services.

“We will communicate early and often; updating the school community as more and more facts are collected,” she said. The protocol for students and parents may vary depending on a variety of factors - damage to the campuses, damage to the city and/or surrounding areas, availability of district vehicles, etc.

All schools have emergency supplies on campus.
