Sonoma’s annual slurry seal street treatment project begins Sept. 24

The City of Sonoma began construction this week on its 2018 Slurry Seal Project. The project, which was slated to begin Monday, Sept. 24, is part of the city’s commitment to keeping Sonoma streets in a safe and functional condition for multi-modal circulation, according to city officials.

This year’s project involves street surface treatment for 12 street segments and three multi-use pathway segments throughout Sonoma. During the slurry seal treatment, specific streets will need to be closed for approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending upon air temperatures. Notification letters will be distributed to properties fronting each street segment to provide notice of vehicular access and parking restrictions.

The Sonoma Public Works Department will start preparing the streets this week, with the actual slurry seal treatment expected to be begin the week of Oct. 1. Work will take place during the day between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A slurry seal treatment is a way to preserve pavement by protecting the surface from the effects of natural aging and the environmental degradation caused by inclement weather, excessive heat and the searing effects of the sun.

Street segments in the city that have deteriorated beyond a stage where a slurry seal treatment can be effectively applied will require asphalt grinding and overlay treatment or a full street reconstruction at a future date.
