Direct from the Sonoma Police Department, first report on yesterday's law enforcement action in Sonoma Valley.|

A traffic stop in El Verano on Saturday afternoon evolved into a full-blown manhunt, as a suspect with an outstanding parole warrant fled Sheriff's deputies and attempted escape on a pink child's bicycle. Here's the story from the Sheriff's Office:

So all the commotion in Sonoma earlier was the result of Alexander Edwards fleeing from deputies who tried to arrest him for an outstanding parole warrant from Santa Clara County.

Mr. Edwards initially fled from us in a vehicle, narrowly missing several patrol cars. After crashing his truck into a ditch, Mr. Edwards fled on foot over fences and through houses in the El Verano area, with Henry-1 tracking him overhead.

We received numerous calls from neighbors about Mr. Edwards' flight path, and learned that he had stolen a child's pink bike and was riding towards Sonoma.

Mr. Edwards rode his trusty steed to a local bar and asked the bartender for a ride because his wife was having a baby, but left when the bar staff questioned his current mode of transportation.

Mr. Edwards then rode into a nearby neighborhood and was again pointed out to us by alert residents who directed us to a house where we found a broken gate and a child's pink bike.

We learned that Mr. Edwards had entered the house, taken a phone from a girl inside and then hidden in the attic.

With help from Sonoma PD K9 Dickie, we found Mr. Edwards hiding in the attic and placed him under arrest.

The stolen bike was later reunited with its rightful owner, minus its handlebar basket.

Further details on this story will be reported in Tuesday's Index-Tribune.
