Sonoma Valley Fire hosts ‘hands-only’ CPR class

‘Hands-only’ CPR takes less than a half-hour to learn|

The Sonoma Valley Fire & Rescue Authority will be hosting a free “hands-only” CPR class from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Sonoma Valley Fire Station, 630 Second St. W.

The instruction takes 10 to 20 minutes and is open to anyone who would like to attend. The class is an awareness level course and doesn’t involve any certifications or prerequisites.

Since the implementation of hands-only CPR and other modifications to how CPR is preformed, both in and out of the hospital setting, there has been a dramatic increase in out of hospital survival from cardiac arrest. Since hands-only CPR doesn’t require an individual to place their mouth on the victim’s mouth to breath for them, there has been increase in the number of people who are willing to perform the procedure on someone they didn’t know. Hands-only CPR is easy to learn, easy to perform and has proven to make a dramatic increase in the survival of victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

Fire officials encourage everyone, young and old, to take 20 minutes out of their day and visit for a quick and informative class. In 10 to 20 minutes, you can learn a skill that may save someone’s life.
