Home winemakers donate to firefighters

Group donates more than 200 bottles of ‘thank you’ wine|

The Sonoma Home Winemakers collected and distributed over 200 bottles of their best wines to show their appreciation to Sonoma firefighters for their heroic effort to save the Valley during the October fires.

The collection of various red and white varietals, blends and even some port was donated by the 30-plus SHW members who created a special commemorative label that was added to their bottles. The back label simply says, “Thank You For Saving Our Valley - A gift of gratitude from the Sonoma Valley Home Winemakers.”

The wine was delivered to the Sonoma Volunteer Firefighters Association who will distribute the wine. Capt. Tom Deeley of the Sonoma Valley Fire & Rescue Authority said, “This is a great gesture on the part of these local winemakers and will be very much appreciated by the firefighters.”

Wine was also delivered to firefighters in Schell-Vista, Kenwood, Eldridge and Mayacamas.

Co-president of Sonoma Home Winemakers, John Randazzo said, “The idea originated with board member J. W. Nickel who worked with a dozen volunteers to pull it all together.”

The Sonoma Home Winemakers, formerly known as the Valley of the Moon Dilettante Enological Society (VOMDES), are a group of home winemakers whose charter is to promote the fine art of making wine and share information among its members. They meet once a month to share ideas and information, evaluate each other’s wine and host speakers from the wine community. Their annual fundraising event “Sonoma Valley Uncorked” is a collaboration between SHW, the Sonoma Plaza Kiwanis Club and the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance.
