Sonoma Police Department plans citizen academy

Class includes a one-day session in Santa Rosa.|

The Sonoma Police Department will host a seven-week Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy from April 4 through May 16.

The academy is informative and fast-paced, providing citizens with an inside look at local law enforcement.

Classes will meet Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sonoma Police Department, 175 First St. W., Sonoma.

The class includes a one-day session in Santa Rosa at the Sheriff’s Office/Jail.

During the academy, students will learn about hiring and training, communications, crime prevention, the correctional system, and all of the investigation units including CSI, Coroner, Violent Crimes, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault and others. Participants are encouraged to ask questions.

The police department is taking applications through March 23.

Potential candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Minimum age of 18 years;

• Community members must live or work in Sonoma County;

• Pass a basic background check;

• No prior felony convictions;

• No misdemeanor arrests within the last 12 months.

Applicants will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis and enrollment is limited to approximately 20 students.

Applications are available at the website, sonomasheriff.org/citizens-academy, or at the station. Completed applications can be turned into or mailed to City of Sonoma Police Department, 175 First St. W., Sonoma, CA 95476.
