July 4 parade theme: ‘Sonoma Strong’

Parade, festival, fireworks slated|

The Sonoma Volunteer Firefighters Association has announced this year’s Fourth of July parade theme is “Sonoma Strong!”

On Oct. 8, the community was severely impacted by wildfires that devastated lives, property, and the environment. The fires affected the entire community in some way or another and the resulting response was unprecedented.

The showing of strength and support within the community was evident from the moment the fires started, and the community’s strength never faltered. “For over a half-century, residents in this town have come together in red, white and blue to celebrate our country and community,” said Bob Norrbom, the group’s spokesperson.

“No other community event reflects this level of community like the Fourth of July celebration. It is an all-volunteer effort that, like our city, evolves with each passing year, growing and improving upon itself. It has become the signature event of our community.”

The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with the parade around the Plaza. All entries should be decorated in a patriotic manner and have some recognizable connection to the theme.

The “Splash Zone” will return for the second year in a row near the El Dorado Hotel as the last parade float passes. Children and adults alike are welcome in the Splash Zone but participants should be ready to get wet.

After the parade, there will be a festival in the Plaza with an assortment of games, information booths, food, live entertainment, drinks and fun for the whole family.

Look for parade and vendor applications to be available in mid-April on the website at sonomavolunteerfirefighters.org.

At dusk, the attention will shift to the Gen. Vallejo’s field as last minute preparations are made to get the fireworks show ready. Food vendors will be at the Field of Dreams parking area from 5 p.m. to midnight.

“The success of this event hinges largely on community support. With your help, the SVFA would like to partner with you to ensure that the largest one-day community event in Sonoma will continue for years to come,” Norrbom said. “To become a sponsor or make a donation, visit our website for more information.”
