Survey: The Sonoma Valley Unified School District has contracted with Leadership Associates to assist in the recruitment and selection of the district’s next superintendent. Volunteering: Teens can earn volunteer or community service hours making dinner for homeless people being assisted by Sonoma Overnight Support every Tuesday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Call 939-1452 for more information.
Coffee with the Principal: The next informal gathering of SVHS principal Kathleen Hawing with parents is set for Friday, Feb. 2, at 8:30 a.m. in the library.
Holiday no more: There will be school on Friday, Jan. 26. Originally students were off as it was a staff development day but due to the October fires, the district is eager to reduce the number of instructional days missed.
Peter Pan: Broadway Bound Kids is enrolling now for the all-ages youth cast of “Peter Pan.” Rehearsals start this week at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Building. The performance dates are May 4, 5 and 6.
Kindness Week: This week is the Great Kindness Challenge 2018. I have heard that Flowery Elementary and Adele Harrison Middle School students will be participating by completing acts of kindness. Each child receives a checklist with different acts of kindness they can complete to demonstrate that kindness matters. The week aims to be a proactive and positive bullying-prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement.
Kindness Redux: Friday, Feb. 9 is “No One Eats Alone Day.” I love this idea which teaches everyone how to make friends at lunch, often the most difficult part of the school day. Does your school have anything planned? Let me know.
Donation: Republic of Thrift made another set of school donation payouts last week of $500 per school. This brings their total donations since opening in 2012 to more than $180,000. The store will celebrate its sixth anniversary next month.
Free lacrosse clinics: A series of free lacrosse clinics for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 is being held on Sundays at Presentation School on Broadway. Visit sonomayouthlacrosse.org for more information.
