Sonoma student art selected for county calendar

Art by Joaquin Garrison appears in Water Awareness Calendar|

The Sonoma County Water Agency offers programs and outreach to schools to support water education and conservation. The Agency holds an annual calendar contest for Sonoma and Marin counties and students in third and fourth grades are eligible to enter. Last year, Flowery and Prestwood elementary schools entered the contest, and more than 43 schools in the county participated with more than 3,000 entries.

Artwork by Joaquin Garrison from Flowery was chosen to be in the 2018 Water Awareness calendar.

The calendars have just been distributed to the local schools and other locations.

Joaquin entered the poster contest as a member of Matt Pope’s third grade class last year. Students were asked to create their own slogan and message to guide their artwork. As a student from the dual immersion program at Flowery, he decided to create a bilingual water conservation poster.

The contest coordinator remarked that the committee loved his use of Spanish and English as well as color selections. The contest is on again this year. Interested teachers can register and view guidelines at scwa.ca.gov/poster-contest-info/.
