Sonoma Valley High School is offering new Agriculture Gateway Symposiums this year to expose more students to the opportunities within school’s Sustainable Agriculture Academy.

The first sessions are for Altimira Middle school students on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 24 and 31 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

“Join us for three enlightening days of fun and discovery into the world of agriculture,” says Felicia Rush, who heads up the ag program at SVHS. “We will teach you how to earn money while expanding your education.”

On the Jan. 17, students will learn about viticulture and the wine growing region of Sonoma with the chance to test sugar levels in fruits and blend their own fruit punch.

On Jan. 24, students will have an opportunity to learn how drones are used in agriculture and get the chance to fly Sonoma Valley High School’s agriculture drone during a drone obstacle race.

On Jan. 31, students will learn about agritechnology and, in particular, how do we feed a growing population on less land? The day includes welding, animal genetics and more.

Adele students are invited to participate in the Symposium Jan. 24 and 31 and on Feb. 7. from 2:30 to 3:25 p.m. They will cover the same topics.

“They are also going to learn how they earn money while expanding their education,” said Rush.

All students interested in participating need to fill out a permission slip in their school’s office.

The opportunity is free and students will be provided with supplies, snacks and prizes, and each student will get to make their own tie-dye shirt.

Students will learn more about Sonoma Valley High School’s Sustainable Agriculture Academy, a small learning community within SVHS with a specialized curriculum for all ag students all four years of high school.
