Sonoma Valley’s state parks seeking volunteers for Sugarloaf, Jack London

Jack London and Sugarloaf Ridge state parks have put out the call for volunteers to help with park operations during the coming year. Both parks are run by nonprofit organizations, and have received no state funding since 2011, so both rely on volunteers to keep them open and fully functional.

Three training sessions are planned for those interested. These include a trail patrol orientation for horse, bike or foot travelers, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at both parks.

On Saturday, March 10, a training specific to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A two-day training session at Jack London State Historic Park takes place on successive Saturdays, April 7 and April 14, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Volunteers are needed to work in a variety of park operations, including at the entrance stations and visitor centers, leading tours, and working as docents in the museum and cottage. More specialized volunteers drive golf carts, play piano, help with administrative/office duties, work in park and trail maintenance, patrol the trails and assist with special events.

Although no specific experience is required, the parks do ask for a commitment of four hours per month. In exchange, volunteers will receive a year’s pass to the parks.
