Tech giant feeds weary survivors in Sonoma Valley

Facebook providing 3,000 meals daily|

Valley residents lucky enough to have a home still standing have busied themselves mopping up this week. Many have put in long days washing down windows and walls, trying to eradicate the smoky taint in their homes.

For those who lost homes, time runs even shorter. On the heels of catastrophe, a thousand tasks need attention. Insurance paperwork, FEMA protocols, the pressing problem of shelter. There aren’t hours enough to get it all done.

In an effort to take one daily chore off the plates of weary residents, Facebook – in collaboration with SF Fights Fire and facilitated by the Epicurean Connection – has stepped up in a big way. Every day, from the many kitchens in their facility in Menlo Park, they have produced, then delivered, 3,000 meals to Sonoma, and will continue to do so through October at least.

Pork curry. Mushroom stroganoff. Even seafood paella. The food is totally free. With an army of volunteers at the ready in Sonoma Springs Community Hall, residents are invited in to survey the options.

Trucked in from Facebook in large vacuum-packed bags, the day’s menu options are divided into four-portion containers.

Volunteers at inquire as to the number of people in a family, then allow selections in quantities that will feed that number. Leftovers are refrigerated overnight at Vella Cheese. Now through Nov. 15, says the Epicurean Connection’s Sheana Davis.

Complimentary SF Off the Grid Food Trucks have also donated their time and food to the community and can be found at the Hall most days.

Feeding a village is an astoundingly complex and expensive endeavor, made to look easy by some very good folks.
