Sebastiani screens ‘Tomorrow’ encore

Environmental film eyes future of humanity|

The June 15 Sonoma Valley premiere of the film “Tomorrow” was received by an enthusiastic audience of more than 100 locals at the First Congregational Church’s Burlingame Hall, with many requesting another showing.

After viewing the film, Roger Rhoten arranged for a special, one-night-only screening at the Sebastiani Theatre at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21.

Bucking the trend of many doom-and-gloom, present-day environmental films, “Tomorrow,” is “without question … absolutely the best film on the future of humanity and the environment,” said entrepreneur and environmentalist Paul Hawken.

The feature-length film (titled “Demain” in its international version), produced by a pair of French notables, won the best documentary film award at the Césars (the French version of the Oscars) in 2016, and has received numerous other awards at film festivals around the world.

The San Francisco Chronicle called the film “a generous cut above the standard enviro-doc,” while the LA Times said it a “forward-thinking take on addressing the demise of the human race.” The film sets out to showcase alternative and creative ways of viewing agriculture, economics, energy and education.

The wide-ranging stories reported in the film from various communities around the globe show that the answers to the environmental crisis facing the planet “lie in a wide mobilization of the human race,” to offset the powerlessness that so many are feeling about the myriad problems facing humanity today.

“‘Tomorrow’ is not just a film, it is the beginning of a movement seeking to encourage local communities around the world to change the way they live for the sake of our planet,” reads the film’s website synopsis.

The screening event is sponsored by Transition Sonoma Valley and the Sebastiani Theatre Foundation; $10 admission fee.
