Teagan Rhodes, a fourth grade student in Peggy McClure’s class at Prestwood Elementary School, won first place in the Native Sons of the Golden West Essay Contest at the school district level and then went on to win at the statewide level as well, receiving a plaque and a check. Her essay will be on display for the coming year at the Native Sons of the Golden West Museum in the Columbia State Historic Park. The essay contest theme was California history, with great flexibility in topics. Teagan chose to write her essay about how a young Miwok girl thinks she can’t do something, but Mother Nature teaches her that she can do anything she puts her mind to.
