Rep. Woolsey returns for Praxis reception in Sonoma

Former Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey to join Sonoma reception recognizing ‘The Mondragón Report.’|

Friends of the Praxis Peace Institute will celebrate the release of its latest book, “The Mondragón Report,” with a reception on Sunday, May 28, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Sonoma. The topic is the “inspiring economic alternative of cooperatives that values people over profit.”

Featured on the program is former Rep. Lynn Woolsey, who served as a member of the U.S. Congress from 1993 to 2013. The district she represented included all of Marin County and most of Sonoma County. During her 20-year tenure in Congress, she was an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq and a champion for workers and children. In 2012 she was ranked Most Liberal member of Congress.

She will be joined by Gayle McLaughlin, former two-term Mayor and current City Council member in Richmond; Sushil Jacob, Associate with the Tuttle Law Group in San Francisco, founder of a worker cooperative academy in the East Bay; and Georgia Kelly, director of Praxis Peace Institute, who initiated the Mondragón seminar and tour for Praxis Peace Institute.

“The Mondragón Report” is a detailed account from 22 people who have attended Praxis Peace Institute’s seminar at the Mondragón Cooperatives in Spain, the largest group of worker-owned businesses in the world. These include 105 businesses that manufacture everything from computer chips and auto parts to bicycles and elevators.

Praxis will take another study group to Mondragón on June 17 - 24, that will include visits to the cooperatives of Mondragón and tours to key areas in the Basque region. There are still spaces available for this study tour.

The reception is a fundraiser for the Praxis Mondragón Scholarship Fund, and it includes tapas and libations. It will be held at a private home in Sonoma, address given upon registration. Tickets are $45 and available online at praxispeace.org, or by calling 939-2973.
