Senior walkabout tradition returns to Sonoma schools

As soon as the last name was called at the senior award ceremony at Sonoma Valley High School on May 18, the graduating students put on their caps and gowns, boarded school buses, and headed for the second annual 'Senior Walkabout.'

Inspired by an article on the Huffington Post, Sonoma Valley High seniors visited Adele Harrison and Altimira middle schools, as well as all five of the district's traditional elementary schools, plus Sonoma Charter, Woodland Star, Presentation and St. Francis Solano elementary schools. At each campus the seniors, wearing graduation garb, were greeted by students and staff, receiving high fives, applause, musical tributes and more.

Seniors shook hands with and hugged former teachers, many of whom were in tears.

'It's complicated to pull off,' said school district Superintendent Louann Carlomagno, 'but so, so, worth it. It has quickly become one of everyone's favorite traditions.'
