Firefighters halted a Boyes Hot Springs house fire early Tuesday after being called to a home with reports of explosions, smoke and flames.

The fire caused extensive damage to the living room and kitchen of the Verde Vista Drive duplex, said Sonoma Valley Fire Chief Steve Akre.

No one was home at the time the fire was reported, just after 8 a.m. Callers told of hearing explosions, as well as seeing smoke and flames coming from the second floor.

The home is in an older neighborhood east of Highway 12 known locally as “the maze.” The fire started inside the residence and an investigation into the cause was underway Tuesday morning.

Firefighters found no sign of an explosion but Akre said callers could have heard windows breaking from the heat.

Sonoma Valley, Glen Ellen and Schell-Vista firefighters responded.
