‘Splash zone’ returns to parade

The Sonoma Volunteer Firefighters Association has announced this year’s Fourth of July celebration events.

This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Local Heroes.”

For more than a half-century, residents in this town have come together in red, white and blue to celebrate our country and community. No other community event reflects the “spirit of Sonoma” like the Fourth of July. It is an all-volunteer effort that, like the city, evolves with each passing year, growing and improving upon itself. It has become the signature event of Sonoma.

Bob Norrbom, with the SVFA, said, “We have some big exciting news - the return of the ‘Splash Zone’ near the El Dorado Hotel.”

The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with the parade around the Plaza. All entries should be decorated in a patriotic manner and have some recognizable connection to the theme. Beginning at 11 a.m., there will be a festival in the Plaza with an assortment of games, information booths, food, live entertainment, drinks and fun for the whole family.

Parade and festival applications are now being accepted by the Sonoma Volunteer Firefighters’ Association for participation in this year’s July 4th Celebration at its website, sonomavolunteerfirefighters.org. The deadline for applications is June 10.

As the skies turn to dusk, the attention will shift to the Gen. Vallejo’s field as last-minute preparations are made to get the fireworks show set. The SVFA has added additional food options for the evening. If you’re around the Field of Dreams, you can enjoy different food trucks parked in the parking lot running from 5 p.m. to midnight.

The success of this event hinges largely on community support.

“With your help, the SVFA would like to partner with you to ensure that the largest one-day community event in Sonoma will continue for years to come,” Norrbom said. “It’s the goal of the SVFA to showcase the Sonoma sponsors and supporters.
