Prescription drug disposal day happening Saturday

This Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and people across the country can sift through cabinets and boxes to find unused prescription drugs and safely dispose of them at pharmacies, libraries and police stations.

In Sonoma and Mendocino counties, such drop-off locations are open year-round, thanks to the Safe Medicine Disposal Program, which helps make sure prescription drugs don’t end up in the water supply or in the wrong hands.

The program has been in place since 2007, with more than 114,000 pounds of unused prescriptions collected since then and 16,637 pounds collected just in 2016. Additional drop-off spots were added for Saturday’s take-back day.

“The take-back day helps to magnify our message,” said Elise Howard, a communications coordinator for the program. “By providing additional locations, it creates a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of unwanted medications.”
