Traveling Sauna visits FAHA

Part of nationwide tour this year|

The Traveling Sauna, a part of Finland’s Centennial Celebration in the United States, will be at FAHA from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 28.

From January to December, the Traveling Sauna will be visiting all corners of the US after originating in Minnesota, then traveling south to Texas, west to Los Angeles and north to San Francisco, Portland and Seattle; then east to Michigan and Massachusetts, and finally south to Florida and points in between. The plan is to end the year in the nation’s capital, Washington DC.

The sauna (pronounced correctly “sow” like the female pig and “na”) is the traditional Finnish bath which uses steam to open the pores. Scrubbing then cleans away the dirt, and finally the pores are closed by a dip in a cold lake or pool. The sauna even has a name, Sisu. One definition of sisu is strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. Sisu is not just momentary courage, but the ability to sustain that courage. It is a word that cannot be fully translated.

FAHA is located at 197 W. Verano Ave. in Sonoma. There is ample free parking. For details, contact Denise Wilbanks at 938-0418.
