The City of Sonoma has listed a new job opening – Public Works Director and City Engineer. The position, currently held by Dan Takasugi, was announced on Wednesday, March 22.

“The Public Works Director/City Engineer will be tasked with the oversight of the Public Works and Engineering functions,” reads the announcement, “and will work with every department in the City, our City Manager, City Council, and a multitude of community partners to ensure that the City of Sonoma continues to be an exceptional place to work, visit, and live.”

Takasugi came to work for Sonoma in 2013, and though soft-spoken and shy of public attention, his influence has been felt throughout Sonoma’s civic affairs in the four years since. He came to Sonoma from Calistoga, where he served in a similar position for seven years.

“All things considered, I’d just as soon sneak out the back door without making any noise,” said Takasugi. He plans to retire, but will stay on the job until a replacement is found and trained.

The brochure advertising the position, which is on the sonomacity.org website, describes the position as follows: “Among the key priorities for this position will be: continued implementation of the City’s Capital Improvement Program; a strategic multi-year investment plan for the City’s parks and trails; water resource management including ground water; and identifying funding resources and opportunities for City maintenance projects and unfunded state mandates.”

The current salary range is listed as $125,258 to $152,252 annually, with a benefits package.

Application and resume filing deadline is Friday, April 21. Applications will be received by Cathy Lanning, administrative services manager, by email at clanning@sonomacity.org or by phone at (707) 933-2217.
