The Sonoma-based Praxis Peace Institute has announced two study tours in Europe for June, one to Croatia and one to Spain, each combining study of social issues with more traditional tourism excursions.

The June 2 – 9 study tour to Dubrovnik, on the Adriatic at the southern tip of Croatia, is titled “Models for a Sustainable Future: Culture, Climate, and Economics.” The week-long excursion will focus on the economic links to climate and culture. How does a culture become politically educated? Historically literate? Resistant to propaganda? What role can social movements and activists play in answering these questions and shifting a culture? These are some of the questions participants will explore, in separate conference tracks of key presentations, cafe discussions, and focused meetings on particular topics.

The conference will be held in a five-star hotel in Cavtat, known to antiquity as Epidaurum since the 4th century BCE. Excursions will include Dubrovnik’s Old Town, nearby islands and valleys, and other Balkan destinations including Montenegro and Zagreb, Croatia’s capital.

Later in June, from June 17-24, Praxis is organizing its eighth 5-day workshop/seminar with the Mondragón Cooperatives in the Basque Country of Spain. The purpose is to learn about worker-owned businesses from the leading consortium of cooperatives in the world, founded in 1955 and now encompass more than 103 businesses with 74,000 worker-owners.

“Praxis Peace Institute has established a special relationship with the Mondragón Cooperatives and is a proud educator of cooperatives and the ethics and values of cooperatives,” writes Georgia Kelly, founder and director of Praxis. “We believe cooperatives are an excellent example of a sustainable and socially just business model for the 21st century.”

Excursions will include tapas at the Basque Culinary Center in the coastal city of San Sebastian, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (designed by Frank Gehry and built by a Mondragón construction co-op), and an excursion to Vitoria, the capital of the Basque Country.

Information and registration is available at praxispeace.org/mondragon.
