For the past 17 years, St. Francis Solano School students have truly taken celebrating Valentines Day to heart. The tradition began in 2000 after teacher Pete Monga was diagnosed with heart disease. He began the fundraiser to raise awareness about heart health and the importance of life-long exercise. Since then, students have participated in an annual Valentine Jump Rope for Hearts fundraiser and have raised close to $50,000 for the American Heart Association. This year, on Feb. 14, the students raised more than $2,200. Kim Lazzari, the school’s PE teacher, coordinates the annual event.
