Chihuahua rescued from house fire in Boyes Hot Springs

A Chihuahua named Woody was rescued from a house fire Wednesday afternoon on Ernest Drive.

While Woody survived his ordeal, the kitchen where the fire started was all but destroyed.

Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the blaze at 778 Ernest Drive, a little after 3 p.m. and had it under control in less than a half hour.

Sonoma Valley Battalion Chief Bob Norrbom said the woman who lived in there, left the house and when she returned, it was ablaze.

Norrbom said the apparent cause was something left on the stove.

The woman found one of her two dogs, but couldn’t find Woody.

Fire personnel found the dog in a back bedroom as he was apparently trying to escape the smoke.

Norrbom said Woody was lethargic when they carried him from the house, but the department has a doggie oxygen mask, so Woody got some oxygen which brought him around.

Fire personnel later took him to Arroyo Veterinary Hospital, where he was stabilized and then transferred to PetCare in Santa Rosa where he was reported doing well Thursday afternoon.

The kitchen, on the other hand, was pretty well destroyed by the blaze. Norrbom said the fire was confined to the kitchen, although firefighters did have to cut a hole in the roof because it had spread to the attic.

The house suffered smoke damage, and Norrbom estimated the damage to the structure at about $70,000.

Three engines, a ladder truck and two ambulances responded.

The fire was contained within a half hour and personnel were on scene until about 5 p.m.
