Crescent Montessori students serve up microeconomy project

Crescent Montessori students grow, prepare and sell lunches|

Crescent Montessori’s middle school students recently prepared and sold hot lunch to the staff and students of the school, as well as to the Sonoma Community Center employees. On the menu was basil and kale pesto pasta, and a fresh tomato, kale and carrot salad.

The vegetables and herbs used in the dishes were from Crescent’s school gardens. The hot lunch is one of the business endeavors of the class microeconomy and this ties in with their culinary arts program. Both the micro-economy and the culinary arts program are part of the life-skills portion of Crescent Montessori School’s middle school curriculum. A main part of the program involves the students planning, banking, budgeting, shopping, cooking, negotiating, advertising, marketing and event planning.

Every year, the class votes on a charitable organization they wish to donate using a portion of their profits. The remainder of the money they make is used to finance a class trip, outing or activity, and is also used for student-selected programs.
