Sonoma students get their hands dirty in Nicaragua

Dozens of Sonoma Valley students have been forever changed by their work group trip organized by Seeds of Learning.|

The Sonoma-based Seeds of Learning began by establishing school construction and scholarship programs in El Salvador 25 years ago. Today, approximately 350 volunteers from all over North America participate in work group programs organized by the nonprofit each year in Nicaragua. Together, USA and Canadian volunteers and Central American community members have built 196 educational rooms with 61 communities.

Student work groups from Sonoma Valley High travel to Nicaragua a least twice a year, once over spring break in March and once over the summer.

In July, an open work group from Sonoma Valley consisted of community members, SOL staff and local students Leslie Molinar, 17 and Kimberly Uzzo, 16, from Sonoma Valley High and Jeramiah Watkins, 17, from Hanna Boys Center.
