A citizen-led proposal to install stop signs along a portion of Second Street East will be under consideration at a meeting of the Traffic Safety Committee this Tuesday evening, July 26, 6 p.m. at the Sonoma Police Department, 175 First St. W. The proposal, supported by a group of neighborhood residents concerned about excessive speeding along Second Street East between Napa and MacArthur streets, calls for the installation of full four-way-stop signs at three separate intersections along the street.

If adopted, the signs would stop traffic along Second Street East at Patten, Chase and France streets. Currently, each of those crossings is a two-way stop, with signs in place to halt vehicles proceeding onto or across Second Street East at all three intersections.

The group behind the proposal has been collecting signatures for a petition in support of the plan. Additionally, the group has distributed flyers describing cars “speeding up and down 2nd Street,” with information suggesting that the stop sign proposal has been reviewed by a TSC subcommittee, which has recommended that the Committee deny the request.

According to a Sonoma Public Works list of police department activities along the strip of road under discussion, there have been only two stops or citations for speeding on Second Street East in the period between Jan. 1, 2014, and July 18, 2016.

The Sonoma Traffic Safety Committee is a five-member group, made up mostly of Sonoma residents. It meets on an as-needed basis to review proposed solutions to traffic safety issues within city limits.

Public commentary and questions will be taken as the stop sign matter comes up for discussion. Also on the agenda is a proposal to paint the curb red on Clay Street between Broadway and Bragg Street.

The community is invited to attend the meeting.
