If you can’t catch a wave this weekend you can at least catch a film about such surfing pursuits – as the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art hosts a July 2 screening of the film “Chasing Mavericks.”
The film, being shown in conjunction with museum’s new “Surf Craft” exhibit on the design and culture of surfing, was inspired by the life of Santa Cruz “soul surfer” and Mavericks competitor Jay Moriarty. The 2012 film stars Gerard Butler as Moriarity’s mentor, Frosty Hesson, and Jonny Weston as Moriarty.
A pre-screening party starts at 6:30 p.m., with grub from Drums & Crumbs and drinks served in the courtyard bar adjacent to the museum. The film is at 8 p.m.; a Q&A with Hesson and surfboard designer Bob Pearson, whose boards were used in the film, follows the screening.
Admission is $20, includes film and drink ticket.
