Skills for Life teen workshops now enrolling

Free course provides ‘Read to Work’ certification|

Teen Services Sonoma is partnering with Sonoma Valley High School to offer a new round of Skills for Life seminars on the high school campus on Thursdays after school from March 17 to April 28. The class series is open to students age 13 to 24.

First up on March 17 is an orientation to the curriculum, expectations and the materials students will use for the workshop series.

March 31: Students will get a look inside the working world – the hiring process, what makes for a great job, phone etiquette and business standards.

April 7: How to build a resume and learn about the job application process.

April 14: Money management and how to pay with checks, plus banking and the importance of financial planning, savings and budgeting.

April 21: Students will be engaged in the job-interview process by practicing what questions to ask, how to respond to questions, what to wear, and how to manage staying poised and focused under pressure.

April 28: Sonoma Valley business professionals will run this session to provide participants with real life interviews including expectations, exposure and feedback.

April 25: Speed Networking returns. This is a collaborative event in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, the Mentoring Alliance, Hanna Boys Center and the Boys & Girls Clubs that will help students to identify community business partners, understand what local employers are looking for and practice networking skills. This program starts at 5:30 p.m.

Teen Services's 'Ready to Work' program includes work-readiness workshops, work-based learning opportunities, job placement and coaching services. Ready to Work aims to bridge the gap between teens and businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies by developing, endorsing and making available a pool of qualified, bilingual, bicultural workers.

'Teen Services is the first employer for 95 percent of the youth we serve,' said Jodie Taylor, Teen Services program director. 'We are also the largest employer of teens in Sonoma Valley, thanks to employment opportunities in our Operation Bicycle, Lovin' Oven and the No Name Café.'

Said SVHS graduate Jillianne Irving, 'I am so grateful for Sonoma Valley Teen services. They taught me how to be who I am, how to love who I am. They have changed my life in just so many ways.'
