Sonoma Valley ‘Food for Fines' program underway

Have you been sitting on a much-overdue library book, afraid to show your face at the library?|

Think of it as a get-out-of-library-jail-free card. Well, perhaps not free – but with a much needed donation of food for the needy. This holiday season, the Sonoma County Library is partnering with Friends in Sonoma Helping (F.I.S.H) and other local food banks to offer a Food For Fines program. Library staff hopes that the Food for Fines program will encourage library patrons to return overdue library materials and pay off accrued library fines by donating food to those in need. The donation of food will erase all fines from past overdue items. Patrons can give to the community and return their library account back in good standing at the same time.

The Food for Fines program runs Tuesday, Dec.1 through Saturday, Dec. 19. Food donation barrels will be found at all library branches. According F.I.S.H, the most needed non-perishable food items include:

• canned tuna and meats

• peanut butter

• beans and rice

• pasta and sauce

• low-sodium soups and stews

• no sugar added canned fruits

• low-sodium canned vegetables

The library is located at 755 West Napa St., Sonoma. For more information contact library manager, Lisa Musgrove, 996-5217 or lmusgrove@sonoma.lib.ca.us.
