Letter of the Day: Greetings to Sonoma from the Sunshine State

Editor, Index-Tribune:

On my annual visit to Sonoma, I had to laugh at the absurdity on a possible referendum to ban leaf blowers (“Leaf Blower Dustup Returns to City Council,” Oct. 2). On the letters to the editor page, a woman writes (“Leaf Blower Emergency,” Oct. 2) she had to go to the hospital after a neighbor’s leaf blower was aimed at her house and hoping to stop it, stands in front of it and gets nailed. The hospital should have examined more than her lungs. This woman and the others who are proposing this ban could do the following: 1) Don’t stand in front of leaf blowers. Here’s an idea: Wait a few minutes after the job is done to go out. 2) Move to Arizona. No grass. 3) Get a life.

What’s after the leaf blowers? Lawnmowers kick up the same dust, dirt, grass, particulates as the leaf blower. Let’s ban lawnmowers. Let’s ban cars...the exhaust is not healthy. Let’s ban charcoal grills. Gas Grills. Wood burners. Let’s keep going... let’s ban most food in the grocery store... they are loaded with antibiotics and pesticides.

Better, let’s ban the wind... after all, the wind picks up the same dust, dirt, etc. as the lawn mowers and leaf blowers.

My proposal... let the people who vote for this ban be obligated to pay for the additional landscaping fees that will be incurred. I’m guessing 12 landscapers on their hands and knees with cuticle scissors ain’t gonna be cheap.
