Water main break ?affects nearly 200 ?VOM water customers

Water was off about 12 hours|

Between 100 and 200 Valley of the Moon Water District customers around Boyes Boulevard lost water for 12 hours Wednesday as the result of a water main leak.

According to Dan Muelrath, water district general manager, the main break occurred late on the night of the Sept. 1 and was not very large. He said there was minimal water surfacing on the street.

“It was during the excavation process Wednesday that the main line shifted further and increased the size of the leak requiring the district to shut down an isolated section of customers in the Boyes Boulevard area,” he said. The outage affected between 100 and 200 customers.

Muelrath said the shutdown was required so that crews could work safely with heavy equipment and replace the section of main that had broken. Field crews worked 48 hours straight to repair the mainline. He said the water was off for about 12 hours.

Water district customers were notified of the water shut down through Facebook and Nextdoor.com

“Given the nature of the break, it is likely due to road/bridge settlement, this failure was not due to old infrastructure,” he said. “Even though the district is very proactive in the replacement of infrastructure, leaks like this are routine in nature and only account for less than one-half of a percent of the district’s total water use.”
