Water saving tips from green gardening expert

No drought of ideas at next VOM Garden Club meetup|

Psst... Sonoma... there’s a drought on.

Which makes it a great time for the Valley of the Moon Garden Club to focus on ways to save water.

At its upcoming June 4 meeting, the Garden Club welcomes sustainability expert Gretchen Schubeck who will tell local green thumbs everything they’ve ever wanted to know about saving water.

Schubeck is program director at Daily Acts, the Petaluma-based organization that provides “hands-on sustainability education” throughout the North Bay.

Her talk will include a variety of water saving ideas, including an overview on greywater systems, rain barrels, lawn conversion, designing and building swales for storing water, water leaks and how to read a water meter.

Schubeck, a City College of San Francisco graduate in urban studies, worked on sustainability projects in New Zealand. In 2008, while serving as Executive Director at Eco Matters Environment Trust, she was named “New Zealander of the Year,” in the environment category for North and South magazine.

As part of Daily Acts, she helps provide local businesses and residents with, “the knowledge and tools to transform lawns into food forests, install greywater systems, create habitat, keep bees, raise chickens and tend to personal and financial ecology.”

The June 4 meeting is at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall, 126 First St. West. A “meet and greet” begins at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting at 7 p.m. The club will provide refreshments, a plant raffle and information on club programs. No charge to members; guest are $5, which can go toward a $20 membership.
