For their first road game of the exhibition season, the Sonoma Stompers will jump from the minor leagues to the Big House – as our local squad travels up Highway 101 on Thursday, May 28 to face a team of inmate athletes at San Quentin State Prison.

The Stompers, looking to finalize their 2015 Opening Day roster, will face the team comprised of inmates from San Quentin’s two team, the A’s and the Giants, who play regularly at the prison’s “Field of Dreams.”

Inmates at San Quentin have been playing baseball since the 1920s, with tryouts held every year. The baseball program, which is funded entirely by donations, is said to have had a tremendous impact over the years on its players. According to prison officials, 98 percent of the men who played baseball at San Quentin have not returned once paroled.

Stompers players reported to camp Friday, May 22, and began spring training the next day. Opening Night is June 1, and tickets are available at www.StompersBaseball.com, or at the Fan Shop, located at 234 West Napa Street in downtown Sonoma.
