Aaron Ryan of Cottage Gardens will talk about switching-out ‘water-hog’ plants for ‘water-conservation’ plants at the Valley of the Moon Garden Club meeting, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 126 First St. W.

Ryan will focus on plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to Sonoma Valley’s climate and conditions with emphasis being on selection of plants from climate zones similar to the Bay Area’s, though not necessarily California native plants.

Ryan grew up in the Bay Area and is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz with majors in plant physiology and horticulture. While in college he worked in the UC Santa Cruz Botanical Garden. At Cottage Gardens, he is responsible for the on-site growing of approximately 75 percent of the plants sold – from seeds, propagation and cuttings.

The club holds a “Meet and Greet” time at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting presentation at 7. The club provides refreshments, a plant raffle and information on club programs.

Members are free and guests are $5, which can go toward the $20 membership fee.
