Sonoma State Historic Park and Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park are seeking volunteer docents to interpret and lead tours for Lachryma Montis, the Vallejo Home; and Gen. Vallejo’s rancho, the Petaluma Adobe.

Gen. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, military commander and director of colonization of the northern frontier of California, settled his “Yankee style” home here in Sonoma and built a cattle ranch outside Petaluma. Both sites are tranquil atmospheres that many visitors come to admire for their cultural significance or serene beauty.

California State Parks is looking for people who are proud of their state’s rich cultural history. Docents are trained volunteers who interpret the sites and lead public tours on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Volunteering offers many benefits. As a volunteer in State Parks, you will meet new and interesting people, enhance your public speaking skills, be involved with the community and participate in many special events.

Free training is offered by California State Parks in cooperation with Sonoma/Petaluma State Historic Parks Association. Training runs three full days: Saturday, May 16 (registration), and then Saturday and Sunday, May 30, and 31. After training, a commitment of three hours a month is required.

To sign up for the training and become a volunteer docent, please contact Park Interpretive Specialist Philip Herrschaft at 938-1519 or e-mail philip.herrschaft@parks.ca.gov.

Registration closes Thursday, May 14.
