July 4 parade applications at SCC

Theme is, ‘A Century of Community: ?Celebrating Through the Decades'|

Applications are available for the Sonoma Community Center’s 52nd annual Fourth of July Parade and Plaza celebration.

The parade is a traditional, small-town celebration intended for the enjoyment of all ages. It is an inclusive event and a wide range of participation is encouraged, including individuals, community organizations, businesses and musical entries. In celebration of the Sonoma Community Center building’s 100th anniversary, the theme for this year’s parade is “A Century of Community: Celebrating Through the Decades.”

Since 1915, Sonoma has seen a lot of change, but the Sonoma Community Center building has served as a constant in bringing the community together through education, culture, and tradition.

Everyone is invited to celebrate the anniversary by making an entry in the annual Fourth of July Parade highlighting a favorite era or event of the last 100 years.

“Maybe it’s the flappers and bootleggers of the Roaring ’20s,” said executive director Toni Castrone. “Or maybe it’s the armed services of the greatest generation or the buttoned-down mad men and women of the ’50s. Maybe it’s the summer of love or the moon landing. The ’70s punk or ’80s hair metal. Perhaps it’s a tribute to the year 2000 when cat videos took over the Internet, changing our lives forever.”

Parade entrants may opt to enter floats in one of several categories to be judged by a panel of Sonoma Community Center supporters.

Winning floats are awarded prize ribbons and bragging rights. For inspiration, Sonoma Community Center is creating a Fourth of July photo archive on its website and is looking for submissions of photos or films of past Sonoma Fourth of July parades.

Contact the Sonoma Community Center front desk for information on how to submit your photos or videos for inclusion.

Download parade application forms, rules and regulations at sonomacommunitycenter.org, or pick up an application in person at the Sonoma Community Center office, 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma.

Information is also available by calling 938-4626, ext. 1. Parade application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, June 29.

Parade entry is free, but donations are accepted, and help offset Sonoma Community Center’s costs to produce the parade.
