A workshop on earthquake preparedness will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Jan. 31, at El Verano Elementary School, 18606 Riverside Dr.

The Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue’s disaster preparedness staff will conduct the workshop.

With a stronger quake, after the shock of surviving what falls and shattering glass, the next big danger is fire from broken gas lines. Fire at any home can spread to all the homes in the neighborhood.

Depending on the time of the quake, people may or may not be home to take care of gas leaks and the fire department will be flooded with urgent calls for help.

Disaster officials say that residents should prepare for 72 hours of being on their own to care for those injured and deal with fire.

The workshop will be presented in English with Spanish translation.
