Too many Lady Dragons for El Mo

1st-place Sonoma SCL unbeaten, start 5-game road trip tonight; JVs, frosh|

With their team depth on display, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls rode head coach Sil Coccia’s “subway system” to their fourth straight win last Thursday night in Pfeiffer Gym to remain unbeaten in Sonoma County League play.

Freely substituting, while making complete lineup changes at times that resembled ice hockey’s full-line changes, Coccia got contributions from his whole roster as the first-place Lady Dragons took a 13-8 first-quarter lead and then pushed it to a 28-17 advantage over a competitive visiting El Molino team.

Then, almost on cue, the Sonoma girls did their second-half thing of taking control of the tempo and momentum of the game, finally shaking off the pesky Lions with another strong finish that sealed a 56-31 SCL victory.

Leading the Lady Dragons were sophomore Grace Cutting’s game-high 15 points, including three treys; junior Renee O’Donnell’s nine points and three rebounds; junior Jenny Eggers’ eight points and six rebounds; junior Sami Von Gober’s eight points, four rebounds and two assists; sophomore Kayla Field’s seven points, four rebounds and three assists; senior Shelby Camilleri’s five points, three rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot; junior Bella Bollman’s two points and seven assists; Sierra Lilly’s two points and three rebounds; and junior Emma Stanfield’s three rebounds and two steals.

The Sonoma girls, who played a Martin Luther King Day nonleague game with Maria Carrillo yesterday in Rincon Valley – results not available at presstime – start a five-game SCL road trip tonight in Santa Rosa, where they’ll face Piner before returning to Santa Rosa to take on Elsie Allen on Thursday, Jan. 22.
