‘Weak’ New Year’s quake in Kenwood

Few rattled by 3.2 jolt on Jan. 1|

A 3.2 magnitude earthquake hit 5 miles southwest of Kenwood Thursday, Jan. 1, at 1:18 p.m. according to officials at the United States Geological Services department. The quake hit on the Rodgers Creek fault line that runs through Sonoma County from just north of Santa Rosa to San Pablo Bay.

This fault line is believed to be connected to the Hayward Fault zone that extends from San Jose about 74 miles northward along the base of the East Bay Hills to San Pablo Bay. In 2012, USGS scientists said the Hayward Fault is due for another magnitude 6.8 to 7.0 earthquake, with the 2008 California Geological Survey reporting there is a 31 percent chance of at least a magnitude-6.7 earthquake in this fault system in the next 30 years.

The reports indicate the quake was “weak” to “light” and was felt more eastward of the epicenter.

Officials at the Kenwood Fire Protection District said no damages in Kenwood and the surrounding area had been reported.
