Jack London Park hosts ‘First Day Hike’

On Jan. 1, Jack London State Historic Park will participate in the national “First Day Hikes” movement sponsored by America’s State Parks and California State Parks, offering people an opportunity to kick off their new year with a healthy start.

The hike will start at 10 a.m. and last about four hours.

The hike for health at Jack London State Historic Park is part of a 50-state collaborative national fitness event and is the first in a series of fitness hikes at the park for 2015. Regular updates on these fitness hikes are available at jacklondonpark.com.

Jack London State Historic Park, with its vast 1,400 scenic acres and more than 20 miles of trails, is an ideal place to maintain a fitness regimen and this “First Day Hike” is a perfect way to get it in motion. Hike the entire trail or just a portion – friendly docents will guide hikers back at various points along the way. The moderately strenuous eight-mile hike will wind through trails rewarding hikers at the top of the summit with sweeping vistas of Sonoma Valley. The “First Day Hike” idea began in 2013 when more than 22,000 people participated in over 400 various hikes, tours and walks throughout all 50 states.

Hikers meet in Upper Parking Area/Beauty Ranch parking lot at Jack London State Historic Park 2400 London Ranch Road in Glen Ellen.

The hike costs $10. Online pre-registration is recommended. No dogs allowed on this hike and it may not be appropriate for children under 13.

Hikers should wear sturdy shoes; bring plenty of water and snacks; Hiking poles suggested. Heavy rain cancels hike.
