Mission sets children’s day

California State Parks, in cooperation with Sonoma/Petaluma State Historic Parks Association, will host Children’s Day at the Mission from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3.

Bring your family and come experience a day of Sonoma life, circa 1823. Park volunteers and staff will be on site wearing historic clothing to help create your custom craft. Weave a basket, hand-dip a candle, rope and brand a steer, or spin and card wool the old-fashion way using wool from the Petaluma Adobe sheep.

Enjoy music, historic California Indian dancing by The Hopper Family Pomo Nation, warm corn bread baked in the horno (beehive oven), cold lemonade, and even a small petting zoo.

The California Indian Museum & Cultural Center will have its pump drill to make shell beads, storytelling, and have a cultural exhibit.

New this year, there will be a cannon and black powder demonstrations at the Sonoma Barracks as well as a Junior Ranger Program for kids age 7 to 12. All crafts and events are free with paid park admission.

Mission San Francisco Solano is located at 114 E. Spain St., in Sonoma. Park admission fees are $3 for adults and $2 for children age 6 to 17, and children under 6 are free.

Admission entitles entry into Sonoma State Historic Park which includes Mission San Francisco Solano, Sonoma Barracks, Toscano Hotel, and General Vallejo’s home, in Sonoma. Park hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
