For the 10th and final year, the Valley of the Moon Trap Club will hold its annual Jim Meehan Memorial Trap Shoot and Barbecue at the club’s South Burndale Road site (27000 Burndale Road) on Saturday, May 3, with competition for men, women and juniors.

The trap benefit event starts at 9 a.m. and the barbecue lunch, silent auction and raffle prizes and the awards presentation – including a commemorative silver belt buckle awarded to the winner of each event by class and high overall – begins at 11 a.m., with no-host beer and wine.

All the proceeds will be donated to the the Sonoma Valley Girls Softball Association and Sonoma Valley 4-H, with entry fees for the shoot and lunch are $50 for adults and $35 for juniors (ages 16-and-under) – lunch only is $20 and children under-12-years-old are admitted free. Eyes and ears protection is mandatory.

In the nine years leading up to this year’s event, put on by the VOM trap club and the Jim Meehan Memorial committee – family members Pam Meehan, Ed Meehan, Patti Meehan and Lynette Meehan, and best friends Robert Clark, Dave Clark, Fred Mertens, Griff Holecek and Mike Hage – has raised more than $40,000 and hopes to raise another $10,000 Saturday.

Over the past decade the Meehan Memorial has funded, along with the Sonoma Valley Girls Softball and Sonoma Valley 4-H, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Valley traveling boys baseball.

“Jim (Meehan) had always supported and contributed to children’s organizations in Sonoma Valley, and our committee has carried his philanthropic desire throughout the years,” said Lynette Meehan.

Donation tickets can be purchased at Steiners Tavern, 465 First St. W.; and Town Square, 482 First St. E. For more details, call Lynette Meehan at 484-1654 or Fred Mertens at 481-9525.
