Meadowcroft hosts gumbo demo, St. Pat’s

The Meadowcroft Wines’ tasting room at Cornerstone Sonoma celebrates the month of March with two annual events that unite good food with good wine.

The second annual Gumbo Cooking Demonstration takes place on Saturday, March 1, from noon to 3 p.m.

“Learn what it takes to make a great gumbo, from the making of the roux to the last touch of the green onions,” said Phyllis Hyland, gumbo queen and tasting room manager. “Gumbo is a staple in the Cajun diet, a comfort food. The gumbo we make will include chicken and our famous Cajun sausage.”

The gumbo will be accompanied with a glass of wine. The cost is $25 a person and $20 for Meadowcroft wine club members.  Reservations are recommended by calling the tasting room at 934-4090.

Meadowcroft’s resident chef, Darby Tarantino, is a graduate of the Ballymaloe Cookery School in County Cork, Ireland, and is preparing an exceptional Irish Food and Wine experience for Saturday, March 15, in honor of the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day.

Upon arrival, guests will enjoy the 2011 Meadowcroft Chardonnay, Carneros, Bonneau Vineyard, followed by the first course of roasted beetroot and rocket salad paired with the 2012 Meadowcroft Pinot Noir, Carneros, Cornerstone Vineyard. The second course features chef’s Ballymaloe lamb stew with Green String Farms Leek and Spring Onion Colcannon paired with the 2011 Meadowcroft Cabernet Sauvignon, Knights Valley, Speedy Creek Vineyard.

The third course features a selection of imported Irish Farmhouse Cheeses with Irish Soda Bread and paired with a winery exclusive of the Winemakers’ Reserve Red Blend. The dessert course is a specialty of Tarantino’s, the traditional banoffee pie, featuring a blend of bananas, cream, toffee and other flavors, paired with the popular “All She Wrote” Port Style Dessert Wine.

The St. Patrick’s Day Wine and Food Pairing takes place on Saturday, March 15, from noon to 3 p.m. is $45 a person, $35 for wine club members.  Reservations are recommended by calling the tasting room at 934-4090.
