Martin (Marty) Shrigley

Marty lived his early years with his loving family in Hayward. The last 26 years, he was a resident of Sonoma Developmental Center on Malone Unit, where he had many friends, and devoted, loving, trained staff to care for him and help him grow. The years were filled with unit parties, outings to restaurants, his hunger for hot fudge sundaes, organized activities with the recreational therapist, etc. All these extras were only possible with donations from generous Malone families, and his own family. But the hours making it possible is from the hearts of Malone staff.

One of his favorite pastimes was to walk outside, sit under a tree listening to music on his radio, and wave to everyone driving past. Marty also spent much time looking at all the family photo collages hung on his bedroom wall, and several photo albums made by his Mom. He was known for his sense of humor, causing laughter from his group leader and any licensed staff. His spirit will be missed by all who knew him.

He was the caring son of Claire Shrigley and the late Bill Shrigley. Marty is survived by sister, Karen Coffee; brothers, Dan Shrigley, Steve Shrigley; and sister, Kathy Beach. He leaves two nieces, Sara and Natalie Coffee, both consistently showing concern, and special attention throughout all Marty’s life. He leaves numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and an uncle.

The family sends a special thank you to the wonderful ICU physicians and nurses at Sonoma Valley Hospital in Sonoma. An extra thank you for the Malone Unit doctor who helped Marty through his many medical issues his last two years.

Think of me not with tears in your eyes, but with a song in your heart.

Donations may be made in his memory for Malone Unit at Sonoma Developmental Center. Checks to be made out to: Malone Parent Group % Vera Baker 1179 Rosita Rd. Pacifica, CA 94044-4221.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, Feb. 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. and service on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward 94544, 510-471-3363.
