Food: Mint and Liberty to offer ‘freshness and choice' (new photo)

Sonoma's new ‘modern diner' opens next week.|

Mint and Liberty, the “modern diner” going in where the Breakaway Café was for years, will open to the public next Wednesday, Nov. 7.

According to a press release, restaurant owners James and Mila Chanamè-Hahn explain the name this way: “These are the things we stand for: Mint is for freshness, farm-to-table ingredients; Liberty is freedom of choice, you can come in and have a sprouted lentil salad or have pork belly and kimchi on top of your hamburger.”

The press release included some teasers from the new menu. Highlights include braised Rancho Gordo beans with smoked mushrooms and kale; “SF Style Cioppino” for two or four with stewed crab, clams, mussels, and shrimp; Hummus Tabbouleh with Lola Sonoma carrots and olives; a “Thanks Giving Turkey” open faced sandwich with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce (also a Breakaway favorite); the Liberty Burger stacked with 5-Dot Ranch beef, choice of toppings and styles including a “Chicago” burger with an all-beef hot dog, pickle, relish, tomato, fresh onion and spicy mustard. And finally, a mint “Oreo” cookie milkshake with house-made so-called “Oreo” cookies.

The Hahns’ bakery, Honey and the Moon, has moved to the restaurant, and still includes the same organic ingredients it did in the former Crisp Bakeshop location on West Napa Street.

Melissa Cameron is managing partner in the restaurant, with Thomas Painter working as general manager. Painter says, they will have “delicious food, wine and cocktails to hand-swirled sodas whose ingredient(s) are fully transparent.”

Hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 19101 Highway 12, Sonoma. 996-5949.
