Tasty flames at the firehouse chicken barbecue

Glen Ellen firefighters cookin’ up a barbecue fundraiser|

Some of Sonoma Valley’s favorite gatherings are firehouse pancake breakfasts and chicken barbecues, all on separate days. Firefighters and their friends are well known for the good food they produce. Local food vendors from Glen Ellen Village Market to Broadway Market and Clover Sonoma practically donate the food, all producing cheerful fun.

Sonoma’s community chicken barbecue season continues Saturday, June 30 with the fun Glen Ellen Firefighters Association’s 88th annual BBQ Dance at the firehouse from 6 p.m. to midnight. A fundraiser for the fire department, the dance will feature music by Tsonoma, local beer and wine, and a dinner of tri-tip, chicken, grilled veggies, baked beans (the best), potato salad and more. $25, $15 if arriving after 8:30 p.m. Firefighters dinner free. Tickets at 666-0552.

We all needed all of our firefighters during the October fires, and locals from throughout the Sonoma Valley loyally support all of the barbecues, especially those of the fire departments that specifically worked to save their neighborhoods – which brings us to the the Schell-Vista Chicken BBQ coming up July 15.

For the Sunday, July 15 meal, Broadway Market passes on its best prices for the chickens, served with beans, salad, and Basque Boulangerie rolls. You can go for lunch, mid-afternoon, dinner, or ask for foil and take the whole caboodle home. Fun for kids, fire engines, silent auction, and lots of beverages. $15 at the door. Noon to 6 p.m.
