The crabbers’ strike ended last weekend, but the weather was so bad that they got one more weekend of rest before tackling the crustaceans.
A real bait and switch? While North Coast buyers/distributors had initially agreed to pay $3 a pound, they switched after the season started and wanted to reduce the price to $2.75. All crabbers on the west coast struck in solidarity of the more local crabbers for this switch.
Bottom line: All parties agreed to a compromised $2.85 a pound. Retail prices will vary according to how much local markets can buy and sell the delicacy for, and whether it’s cleaned and cracked or not.
